Operations / General Manager | FMCG Food, Taunton, Somerset
A confidential, successful and growing business based in Taunton, seeking an ambitious and commercially minded Operations Director / General Manager to join its senior leadership team.
This is a pivotal appointment and an opportunity to play a key role in shaping the future growth of the business. Working closely with the owners, you will lead operational strategy, develop the management team and implement scalable processes to support continued growth.
You will oversee key operational areas including warehouse, distribution and customer service, whilst driving improvements across efficiency, performance and profitability.
This is more than a traditional Operations Director role. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make a genuine impact on the future direction and growth of the business.
The company is looking for someone who can bring structure, leadership and commercial thinking whilst working closely with the owners and existing management team.
There is also genuine long-term progression potential towards Managing Director level for the right person.
What you'll do
- Developing and delivering operational strategy to support business growth
- Improving processes, efficiency and cost control
- Implementing robust SOPs, KPIs and management reporting
- Leading and developing senior managers and their teams
- Building accountability and high-performing teams
- Supporting forecasting, budgeting and margin improvement
- Overseeing warehouse, distribution and operational performance
- Driving continuous improvement across the business
- Taking responsibility for Health & Safety and operational compliance
What you'll need
- This role requires a proven senior operational leader from a relevant fast-paced environment.
- We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with leadership experience gained within food distribution, food wholesale, ambient food, logistics or a closely related sector.
- You will have a strong understanding of warehouse and distribution operations and experience of leading managers, improving performance and implementing structured processes and KPIs.
- Proven senior operational leadership experience within food distribution, wholesale, ambient food, logistics or a similar environment
- Experience managing and developing managers and operational teams
- A strong track record of improving operational performance through KPIs, processes and accountability
- Commercial awareness, including an understanding of costs, margins and operational efficiency
- Experience working within a fast-paced SME or founder-led business
- The ability to balance strategic thinking with a hands-on leadership approach
- Resilience, maturity and confidence operating in a growing and evolving business
- A genuine passion for developing people and building scalable, high-performing operations
